Young athletes from the Weston Ranch Little League swapped their bats and gloves for gavels and agendas on Tuesday, participating in a mock government session at Stockton's newly opened City Hall. The event marked the launch of a civic education initiative designed to introduce local youth to the inner workings of municipal government.
During the interactive session, players took on roles as city council members, the mayor, and city staff, debating a fictional proposal to build a new community sports complex. The children presented arguments for and against the project, learning firsthand how public meetings operate and how decisions are made that affect their neighborhoods.
City officials organized the program to bridge the gap between young residents and local governance. "We want kids to see that City Hall is their building, and that their voices matter," said a spokesperson for the mayor's office. The initiative will expand to other youth sports leagues and school groups in the coming months.
For the Little League players, the experience offered a different kind of teamwork. Instead of working together to turn a double play, they collaborated to pass a mock resolution. Many said they felt more confident about speaking up in public and understanding how local government touches their daily lives, from park maintenance to public safety. The program is expected to run quarterly, with the next session open to middle school students.
