Washington state has fallen to 31st in the nation for education outcomes, according to a new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The ranking comes even as per-pupil spending reached an all-time high of $20,300, raising questions about where the money is going.
The report measures child well-being across multiple indicators, including reading and math proficiency, high school graduation rates, and preschool enrollment. Washington's drop from 28th place last year reflects a broader trend of stagnating academic performance despite massive funding increases. State test scores have continued to slide, particularly in reading and math for fourth and eighth graders.
Education advocates point to several possible reasons. Some argue that the money is being absorbed by rising special education costs, pension obligations, and administrative overhead rather than reaching classrooms. Others note that Washington's teacher shortage and high cost of living make it hard to retain experienced educators. The state also struggles with persistent achievement gaps between racial and economic groups.
Lawmakers have poured billions into K-12 education since the state Supreme Court's McCleary decision in 2012, which found the state was underfunding schools. But the new data suggests that simply spending more does not guarantee better results. Parents and teachers are now calling for a closer look at how funds are allocated and whether the current system is actually helping students learn.
