UT System, community colleges complying with Texas’ DEI ban, auditors find

A new state audit has determined that the University of Texas System and several community colleges across the state are following Texas' ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Victoria College was among the institutions listed as fully compliant with the law, which took effect earlier this year.

The audit, conducted by the Texas State Auditor's Office, reviewed policies and practices at multiple public higher education institutions. It found that the UT System and the community colleges had removed DEI offices, ended related training programs, and stopped using diversity statements in hiring and admissions. The report noted that schools have largely restructured their operations to avoid running afoul of Senate Bill 17, the legislation that prohibits DEI initiatives at public universities and colleges.

Officials at Victoria College confirmed that the institution has adjusted its procedures to meet the legal requirements. The college eliminated its DEI office last year and redirected resources toward student success programs that do not focus on identity-based criteria. The audit praised the school for its clear documentation of the changes.

The findings come amid ongoing debate over the ban. Supporters argue it ensures equal treatment for all students, while critics say it limits efforts to support underrepresented groups. For now, the audit confirms that Texas colleges are moving forward under the new rules, with no major violations reported.
