Tampa company bets AI can speed special education evaluations

A Tampa-based education technology firm is moving into the field of telehealth psychology with a focus on reducing long wait times for special education assessments. The company is deploying artificial intelligence tools designed to help psychologists conduct evaluations more efficiently, aiming to cut months-long delays down to weeks or even days.

The new system uses AI to handle parts of the evaluation process that are typically time-consuming for human clinicians. This includes analyzing student responses during cognitive testing and generating preliminary reports. The goal is not to replace psychologists but to free them up so they can see more students and make decisions faster. School districts across Florida have struggled for years with a shortage of qualified evaluators, leaving many children waiting for services they are legally entitled to receive.

Company officials say the AI is trained on de-identified data and is designed to flag patterns that a human might miss. They emphasize that a licensed psychologist still reviews all results and makes the final determination. The expansion into telehealth also means districts in rural or underserved areas can connect with specialists remotely, further reducing the bottleneck.

Critics, however, raise concerns about data privacy and whether an algorithm can truly understand the nuances of a child's learning needs. The company insists that its system is only a support tool and that human oversight remains the core of the process. Early pilot programs in several Florida counties have shown promising results, with evaluation times dropping by nearly 40 percent. The company plans to roll out the service to more districts later this year.
