Opinion: Civics education extends beyond schools

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, a renewed call for civic literacy is emerging. While much of the focus has been on what happens inside the classroom, one columnist argues that the real work of citizenship must extend far beyond the schoolhouse walls. John Hood suggests that North Carolinians, in particular, have an opportunity to lead a broader, more inclusive effort to celebrate and debate the nation's founding principles.

The argument is simple: civics education cannot be a subject that ends with a final exam. If we rely solely on schools to produce informed citizens, we will fail. The pressures on teachers are immense, and the curriculum is already packed. Instead, the responsibility must be shared by families, community organizations, churches, and local media. The 250th anniversary is not just a date on the calendar; it is a chance for communities to host town halls, sponsor essay contests, and encourage open dialogue about the successes and failures of American democracy.

Hood emphasizes that this effort should not be a partisan exercise. It is not about promoting a single, sanitized view of history. Rather, it is about equipping people with the tools to understand how government works, to evaluate sources of information, and to engage in respectful disagreement. Without these skills, the public becomes vulnerable to misinformation and disengagement.

The challenge is significant, but the opportunity is clear. A healthy republic requires active, informed participants, not just passive observers. By taking civics out of the textbook and into the living room, the workplace, and the public square, communities can build a stronger foundation for the next 250 years.
