Hampton Roads shares successes, challenges in education with state superintendent

Virginia Department of Education Superintendent Jenna Conway recently visited Hampton Roads to hear directly from local educators, administrators, and community members about the region's specific educational landscape. The meeting focused on both the notable achievements and the persistent challenges facing schools in the area.

Among the successes highlighted were innovative programs in career and technical education that have boosted student engagement and job readiness. Several school divisions reported improved literacy rates through targeted early reading interventions, aligning with the state's push for stronger foundational skills. Local leaders also pointed to successful partnerships with businesses and nonprofits that provide students with real-world learning experiences.

However, the conversation also turned to significant hurdles. Chronic absenteeism remains a major concern, particularly in urban districts where transportation and housing instability affect attendance. School officials stressed the need for more state funding to address aging infrastructure, especially in rural parts of the region. Mental health support for students and staff was another top priority, with leaders noting that the demand for counselors and social workers far exceeds current resources.

Conway acknowledged the feedback and emphasized the importance of tailoring state policy to regional realities. She noted that while Virginia has seen overall academic recovery since the pandemic, disparities between communities require targeted solutions. The superintendent pledged to take the concerns from Hampton Roads back to Richmond as the state develops its next round of education initiatives. Local leaders left the meeting hopeful that their voices would shape future funding and policy decisions.
