HISD special education families brace for uncertain new year

As the new school year begins, many families with children in Houston ISD special education programs are feeling anxious and frustrated. They say the district has not provided clear answers about what changes are coming, even after a state directive required a full review of thousands of student records.

The Texas Education Agency had ordered HISD to meet with families and go over individual education plans, or IEPs, for students who receive special services. The goal was to identify gaps and make sure each child gets the support they need. But several parents report that those meetings have been delayed, rescheduled, or left with more questions than answers.

One mother, who asked not to be named, said she spent weeks trying to get a straight response from her child's campus. She was told the review would happen, but no date was set. Another parent said the district sent a generic letter that did not address her son's specific needs, including his speech therapy sessions and classroom accommodations.

The uncertainty is hitting families hard. Some are considering legal help or filing complaints with the state. Others are simply waiting, hoping that services will not be cut or changed without warning.

HISD officials have said they are working through the process and that the review is extensive. They have promised to communicate with families as soon as more details are available. But for now, many parents feel they are in the dark, and they worry that their children will pay the price for the district's slow response.

Advocates for special education students are urging families to keep records of all communication and to push for written confirmation of any service changes. They also remind parents that the state order is not optional, and that HISD is required to follow through. Until then, the wait continues for families who just want a clear plan for their kids.
