Missouri education board wary of $300 million school funding increase

Missouri education board wary of $300 million school funding increase

Missouri education leaders are gearing up for a tough fight in the state capitol next year, as they plan to request a significant increase of around $300 million for public schools. The proposal, which would mark one of the largest single-year funding boosts in recent memory, is already drawing concern from board members who worry about the political and fiscal fallout.

The request is intended to address growing costs in transportation, special education, and teacher salaries, which have lagged behind regional averages for years. Supporters argue that the funding is essential to prevent further staff shortages and to keep classrooms competitive. But state education board members are treading carefully, noting that the ask comes at a time when the governor's office is pushing for tax cuts and other spending priorities.

Several board members expressed hesitation during preliminary discussions, questioning whether the full amount can be justified to a legislature that has historically been cautious with education spending. Some suggested phasing in the increase over two years to ease the burden on the state budget. Others pointed out that federal pandemic relief funds, which propped up many districts in recent years, are now gone, leaving local schools in a tighter spot.

The final request will be submitted to the governor's budget office later this fall. Lawmakers will then debate the proposal during the regular session starting in January. If approved, the funding would represent a roughly seven percent increase over current levels, but it is far from guaranteed. Education advocates are already planning to rally support, while fiscal conservatives are signaling they will demand more accountability for how districts spend existing dollars.

For now, the board is holding off on a formal vote, but the message is clear: this will not be an easy ask.
