This weekend, Oregon's most prominent teachers' union will be teaching educators how to keep Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) away from students in schools. The training sessions aim to equip teachers and school staff with the knowledge and tools necessary to protect vulnerable students from potential immigration enforcement actions within educational environments.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns about the impact of federal immigration policies on students' safety and well-being. Educators will learn about their rights and responsibilities, as well as strategies to create a supportive and secure atmosphere for all students, regardless of their immigration status.
Participants will engage in discussions on how to effectively respond to ICE inquiries and the importance of maintaining student confidentiality. The union emphasizes that schools should be safe havens for learning and growth, free from the fear of deportation or harassment. Through this training, the Oregon Education Association aims to foster a more inclusive and protective educational environment for all children.
