A Southwest Louisiana education leader praised the state's record student achievement while warning that continued reductions to the state's public school funding formula could undermine years of academic progress.
Speaking before a gathering of educators and policymakers, BESE member Berken highlighted recent gains in student test scores and graduation rates across Louisiana. The state has seen steady improvement in several key metrics, including early literacy and math proficiency, which Berken attributed to targeted investments and teacher support programs.
"These results show what happens when we prioritize our classrooms," Berken said. "But we are at a turning point. If we keep cutting the funding formula, we risk losing everything we have built."
Berken pointed to proposed budget reductions that could reduce per-student spending in the upcoming fiscal year. While acknowledging the state's broader fiscal challenges, he argued that education funding must remain a top priority. He noted that many school districts in rural and low-income areas rely heavily on state dollars and would feel the deepest impact from any cuts.
The warning comes as the Louisiana legislature debates the next state budget. Some lawmakers have called for tighter spending across all agencies, including education. Berken urged them to consider the long-term consequences of scaling back support.
"One step forward and two steps back is not a strategy," he said. "Our students deserve better than that."
