LANSING, Mich. – A significant state initiative is launching to help Michigan students access crucial college funding. The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential (MiLEAP) has granted $10 million directly to local school districts and public high schools to increase completion rates of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
This substantial investment, distributed through the Universal FAFSA Challenge Awards, comes at a critical time. Nationwide FAFSA completion has seen delays and challenges following a federally mandated overhaul of the form. The state funds are intended to provide schools with the resources needed to offer hands-on support to students and families navigating the often complex application process.
The grants will enable schools to host workshops, hire additional advisors, and provide technology for students who need it to complete their applications. Completing the FAFSA is the essential first step for students to unlock federal grants, state scholarships, and institutional aid, making post-secondary education more affordable.
Officials emphasized that filling out the form is vital for all graduating seniors, regardless of their immediate plans, as it keeps financial options open. The initiative underscores the state's commitment to removing barriers to higher education and career training, aiming to ensure that financial concerns do not prevent students from pursuing their educational goals.
