Chicago Public Schools is moving forward with a plan to reduce its teaching staff and increase class sizes as part of an effort to close a massive $732 million budget gap. The district has not yet specified exactly how many positions will be eliminated, but an analysis from WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times suggests the number could exceed 700 teachers.
In addition to teacher cuts, CPS intends to trim some assistant principal roles. However, the district is also planning to boost spending on special education teachers, signaling a targeted approach to the reductions. The move has drawn concern from educators and parent groups who worry about the impact on classroom learning.
District officials argue the cuts are necessary to maintain financial stability. They say larger class sizes and a leaner administrative structure will help preserve core programs while avoiding deeper cuts elsewhere. Critics counter that the plan places an unfair burden on students and staff, especially in schools that already struggle with overcrowding.
The budget proposal comes as CPS faces ongoing pressure from declining enrollment and rising pension costs. The final number of job cuts will depend on negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union and approval from the school board. A vote on the budget is expected in the coming weeks.
