State Representative Jim Prokopiak announced that nearly $45,000 in grants has been awarded to schools and organizations across Bucks County to support environmental education programs. The funding aims to teach students about recycling, conservation, and ecological responsibility.
"Teaching kids about recycling, protecting the environment and practicing responsibility go a long way in ensuring that the next generation is an eco-friendly one," Prokopiak said in a statement.
The grants, distributed through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, will fund hands-on projects including outdoor classrooms, water quality monitoring, and waste reduction initiatives. Several school districts and nonprofit groups applied for the competitive funding, which supports curriculum development and field-based learning experiences.
Prokopiak emphasized that early education on environmental issues helps build lifelong habits. He noted that students who learn about sustainability in the classroom often carry those lessons home, influencing family decisions on recycling and energy use.
The awarded projects range from elementary school garden programs to high school watershed studies. Organizers say the funding will allow them to purchase equipment, train teachers, and create lasting resources for students. The grants cover the current academic year, with some programs expected to continue into future semesters.
