Ballou High School in D.C.'s Ward 8 was closed entirely on Tuesday, while the Cardozo Education Campus in Ward 1 conducted a "heat evacuation" that sent students home early. The disruptions came after indoor temperatures climbed to uncomfortable levels for the second consecutive day, leaving students and staff struggling to focus in sweltering conditions.
At Ballou, administrators decided to cancel classes after determining that the building could not provide a safe learning environment. At Cardozo, the situation escalated quickly during the morning hours, forcing officials to dismiss students before lunch. Parents were notified through automated calls and text alerts, though some complained about the late notice.
The closures highlight a persistent problem in aging school infrastructure across the District. Many buildings lack modern air conditioning or rely on outdated cooling systems that cannot handle extreme heat. Teachers reported that thermostats in some classrooms read well above 85 degrees, making it difficult for students to concentrate or even remain awake.
D.C. Public Schools officials said they are working to address the issue, but repairs and upgrades take time. In the meantime, families are left to scramble for last-minute childcare or adjust work schedules. With temperatures expected to remain high for the rest of the week, more disruptions could be on the way.
