TROY alumna earns Houston Symphony's award for excellence in music education

Eun Sung Kim, who graduated from Troy University in 2005 with a degree in music education, has been awarded the Houston Symphony's Spec Charitable Foundation Award for Excellence in Music Education. The recognition came during the symphony's annual Salute to Educators performance on March 29.

Kim currently works as a strings teacher and Magnet Coordinator for Carter Academy, a school within the Aldine Independent School District. Her role involves leading the school's orchestra program and coordinating the magnet curriculum, which draws students from across the district who are interested in specialized academic tracks.

The award is given each year to honor educators who show outstanding commitment to music instruction and student development. Kim's work has focused on building a strong strings program at Carter Academy, giving students early access to instruments and performance opportunities that might not otherwise be available.

Colleagues describe her as a dedicated teacher who goes beyond the classroom to support her students. Many of her former students have gone on to participate in regional and state-level music competitions. Kim has also worked to integrate music education with the broader academic goals of the magnet program, helping students see the connection between discipline in music and success in other subjects.

The Houston Symphony's Salute to Educators event is designed to highlight the contributions of music teachers in the Houston area. Kim's award places her among a select group of educators recognized for making a lasting impact on young musicians and their communities.
