Students and community organizations sue to desegregate Massachusetts schools

A coalition of students and community organizations has filed a lawsuit against the state of Massachusetts, alleging that its public school system remains deeply segregated and unequal. The case, brought in Suffolk Superior Court, argues that the state has failed to uphold its constitutional duty to provide an equitable education to all children, particularly those in urban districts with high concentrations of Black and Latino students.

The plaintiffs claim that decades of residential segregation, combined with state funding policies that favor wealthier suburbs, have created a two-tiered system. Students in cities like Boston, Springfield, and Worcester often attend schools with fewer resources, larger class sizes, and less experienced teachers compared to their peers in predominantly white, affluent communities. The lawsuit seeks a court order requiring the state to take active steps to integrate schools and redistribute funding more fairly.

This legal action is the latest in a series of efforts across the country to address persistent racial and economic divides in education. While Massachusetts was a pioneer in school desegregation following the 1974 Morgan v. Hennigan case, advocates argue that progress has stalled or reversed in recent years. The complaint points to data showing that many schools in the state are more segregated now than they were in the 1990s.

The defendants, including the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, have not yet filed a formal response. A spokesperson for the state attorney general's office said they are reviewing the complaint. The case is expected to draw national attention as a test of whether courts will compel states to take affirmative action to dismantle systemic segregation in the 21st century.
