Aquidneck Community Table (ACT) has received a substantial grant of $745,346 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the R.I. Food Policy Council (RIFPC) aimed at enhancing food and composting education in schools across Newport. This funding will enable ACT to implement innovative programs that not only educate students about sustainable food practices but also promote composting as a crucial component of waste reduction.
The grant is part of a larger initiative, with the EPA investing a total of $18.7 million to combat food waste throughout Rhode Island. By integrating these educational programs into the school curriculum, ACT aims to instill a sense of responsibility in students regarding food consumption and waste management.
This initiative is expected to foster a deeper understanding of the environmental impacts of food waste while encouraging healthier eating habits among young people. The funding will also support the development of community resources that enhance local food systems and promote sustainability.
