Safety, education top of mind as e-bike, e-scooter season begins

NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WCMH) - Summer officially begins in two weeks, which means electric bikes and scooters are appearing on roads and paths in greater numbers. As their popularity has grown, so have concerns about how to use them safely.

Local officials and safety advocates are urging riders to brush up on the rules before heading out. That includes knowing where e-bikes and e-scooters are allowed, wearing a helmet, and obeying traffic signals. Many riders do not realize that these devices can reach speeds of 20 miles per hour or more, which increases the risk of serious injury in a crash.

Education is also a key focus this season. Some communities are offering workshops and online resources to help new riders understand proper operation and local laws. Police departments are reminding riders that e-bikes and e-scooters are subject to the same traffic rules as bicycles in most areas.

For pedestrians, the message is to stay aware. Shared paths can become crowded, and a fast-moving scooter can appear suddenly. Both riders and walkers are encouraged to be patient and respectful.

As the weather warms up, the goal is to keep everyone safe while enjoying the convenience and fun that these electric vehicles provide.
