SANTA CRUZ - Santa Cruz bicycle enthusiasts rolled into Bay View Elementary School on Saturday for Pedal Palooza, a community event focused on bike safety and rider education.
Cyclists of all ages arrived at the school to take part in hands-on bike education sessions. The event offered a range of activities, from basic bike maintenance workshops to on-road safety drills. Young riders practiced navigating mock intersections, learning hand signals and proper stopping techniques. Adults attended sessions on commuting tips and how to share the road with cars and pedestrians.
Organizers set up a skills course where participants could test their balance and control. Volunteers from local bike shops were on hand to perform free safety checks, adjusting brakes and tightening loose chains. A helmet fitting station ensured every rider left with a properly secured helmet.
The gathering also featured a slow race, where riders competed to see who could travel the shortest distance without putting a foot down. Laughter and cheers filled the parking lot as cyclists wobbled and balanced.
Pedal Palooza aimed to build confidence for riders of all levels. By combining education with fun, the event encouraged more people to see biking as a safe and enjoyable way to get around Santa Cruz.
