Starting July 1, Idaho schools must follow updated policies on generative artificial intelligence and stricter accountability for virtual schools. The new laws aim to address the rapid adoption of AI tools in classrooms while tightening oversight of online education programs.
Under the AI framework, school districts are required to develop guidelines for students and teachers on the appropriate use of generative AI, such as chatbots and content-creating software. The rules focus on academic integrity, data privacy, and ensuring that AI supplements rather than replaces human instruction. Districts must also train staff on how to detect AI misuse and teach students about responsible use.
Separately, the legislation imposes new accountability measures on virtual schools. These schools must now report detailed attendance data, student-teacher interaction logs, and academic progress metrics. Lawmakers cited concerns about low engagement and inconsistent outcomes in some online programs. The new rules require virtual schools to meet the same performance standards as traditional brick-and-mortar schools or face potential closure.
Supporters say the laws strike a balance between innovation and oversight. Critics worry the AI guidelines could stifle experimentation or place an undue burden on rural districts with limited resources. The Idaho Department of Education will provide model policies and training materials to help districts comply by the start of the next school year.
