SEYMOUR -- U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon visited Seymour public schools on Friday, June 13, to observe the district's career and technical education programs. During her tour, McMahon stopped at Seymour High School and the local middle school, where she met with students and teachers involved in hands-on learning tracks.
The Secretary focused on programs that blend traditional academics with practical job skills, including courses in manufacturing, health sciences, and information technology. McMahon emphasized the importance of preparing students for the workforce directly after graduation, rather than pushing a four-year college degree as the only path to success.
"This is exactly the kind of real-world learning that we need to expand across the country," McMahon said during a roundtable with school administrators. She praised Seymour's partnerships with local businesses, which allow students to earn certifications and gain on-site experience while still in high school.
School officials highlighted their "career academy" model, which lets students choose a specialized field in their junior and senior years. McMahon noted that such programs align with the Department of Education's push for more federal funding for vocational training.
The visit concluded with a brief question-and-answer session with student leaders. McMahon did not take questions from the press.
