RALEIGH - The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has opened a Title IX investigation into Buncombe County Schools. The probe aims to determine whether the district violated federal law by allowing biological males to access facilities or programs designated for females. Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational settings.
The investigation was launched to examine complaints that the school system may have failed to uphold protections for students. Officials from the Office for Civil Rights will review policies and practices within the district. Buncombe County Schools officials have acknowledged the inquiry and stated they will cooperate fully with the review.
The outcome of the investigation could lead to changes in how the district handles gender-related policies. It may also set a precedent for other school systems facing similar questions. The Education Department has not provided a timeline for when the investigation will conclude.
