A Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board member and a local county commissioner have raised questions about the current cell phone policy in the district. The issue came up during the Tuesday, May 19 meeting, just before the board approved updates to the 2026-2027 Student Code of Conduct.
Board member Aron Maberry asked about the rules allowing students to use their phones during the school day. He suggested the district might want to take a closer look at whether those rules are working. The discussion did not lead to an immediate vote or change, but Maberry indicated he would like the board to review the policy more formally.
The current code of conduct permits students to have phones but restricts their use during class time unless a teacher allows it for a lesson. Critics argue that even with those limits, phones are a major distraction and hurt student focus. Supporters of the existing policy say it gives teachers flexibility and teaches students responsibility.
No decision was made at the meeting, but the conversation signals that the issue could come up again as the board prepares for the next school year.
