Carter Academy strings teacher and magnet coordinator Eun Sung Kim has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Spec’s Charitable Foundation Award for Excellence in Music Education, an honor presented by the Houston Symphony. This prestigious award celebrates music educators who show exceptional dedication to student learning, creativity, and expanding access to high-quality music instruction.
Kim will be formally recognized during the Houston Symphony’s annual Salute to Educators performance, scheduled for May 2 at Jones Hall. Since joining Aldine ISD Choice Schools in 2005, Kim has devoted nearly two decades to shaping young musicians. She currently teaches strings at Carter Academy while also coordinating the school’s magnet programming.
Under Kim’s leadership, Carter Academy has developed a robust strings program that emphasizes both technical skill and artistic expression. Her approach goes beyond teaching notes and rhythms; she fosters a classroom environment where students feel empowered to explore their musical potential. Colleagues and administrators praise her ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music.
The award not only highlights Kim’s individual achievements but also underscores the importance of dedicated music educators in public schools. By honoring teachers like Kim, the Houston Symphony aims to draw attention to the vital role that music education plays in developing well-rounded students. Kim’s recognition serves as an inspiration to fellow educators and a testament to the lasting impact of passionate teaching in the arts.
