California pours billions into education funding, yet a growing crisis is pushing teachers further from the classrooms they serve. Even educators earning six-figure salaries are finding it impossible to afford rent or a mortgage in many communities across the state. The gap between teacher pay and housing costs has become so severe that school districts are struggling to recruit and retain staff, with some positions going unfilled for entire school years.
In coastal cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, the median home price now exceeds one million dollars. A teacher earning $90,000 to $110,000 annually would need to spend more than half their income on a basic apartment or mortgage payment. Many are forced to commute two hours or more each way, or share housing with multiple roommates. Some have given up entirely and moved to cheaper states.
The problem is not limited to expensive urban areas. In mountain towns like Truckee and coastal enclaves like Santa Cruz, even modest homes cost over $800,000. School districts have resorted to offering signing bonuses, housing stipends, and even building teacher housing on district-owned land. But these efforts are patchwork solutions. The state's teacher shortage is worst in low-income and rural districts, where salaries are lower and housing is still out of reach.
Experts say the root cause is simple: California has not built enough housing to meet demand. Until the state significantly increases supply, teachers will continue to be priced out of the communities they serve. Some districts are now partnering with developers to create affordable rental units specifically for school staff. But for many educators, the dream of living near their school remains just that, a dream.
